It frees up NASA to spend a half billion dollars on old tech RS-25 engines and burn them up after a single launch, assuming they ever manage to get SLS off the ground. As with a lot of things in the government, outsourcing to a private company that has actual budget constraints and oversight tends to get the job done faster, better and cheaper.

As someone who worked at Blue Origin on the New Shepard program, I am so pumped to see SpaceX achieve this historic launch.

With that username shouldn't you have been rooting for failure so you don't miss out on payments for Soyuz seats?

I love the behind the seats view. And the entire scene would have been unimaginable a decade ago. Several million people watching from inside the cockpit of a space launch, the first stage being reused so that it'll cost a hundred million instead of a billion a pop.

Or we can make humanity multiplanetary so that we have more options.

That's not realistically an either or proposition. Actually to me that's a bit of a straw man arguement.

Fixing the environment at this point requires a complete cultural change, not a big government spend. It's not the consumption that's the problem. Like you said, it's that what we consume is then thrown away and ends up withe occupying space on the ground or floating in the ocean. I don't forsee any governments having much success changing that cycle. While I think we will see more efficient recycling and use of truly biodegradable products, it'll be driven by resource scarcity as that problem slowly grows. There just isn't the political will out there to try and force the American people not to be excessive consumers.

As for the spend on the space program, how about looking at the whole US budget. NASA gets peanuts compared to everyone else. In total NASA gets slightly less than 0.5% of the US yearly budget, roughly what the US military spends in three days... maybe there could be some savings there lol.

As for going to Mars, Kennedy said it best. Sometimes we don't do things because they are easy, but because they are hard. What we will learn transiting interplanetary space could lead to things like Asteroid mining, which could open up the reality of colonising the solar system should our population growth remain out of control.

The innovation motivation is fact. As a division-level management government employee (VA), I can tell you that for every company that HAS the contract there are 3 to 4 others who WANT the contract. Without fail. Whenever one of our contracts is simply up for renewal there are several companies wanting to put their bid in. They want the next contract to do it faster, better, and cheaper.

Now, for spacelift resupply and orbital lift, there are several companies that are waiting for Space-X to have an accident so they can swoop in. This success here is making them work even harder to come up with new technologies and capabilities that set them apart.

It’s on. And we all benefit from this competition.

I think their space suits look like they are from a 1970s scifi movie with a low budget. :)

This so much. I had the exact thought today that we never got this kind of involvement with the Apollo program.
