Wait you don't have an inreach already when you wander in the woods?

I was going to say. There isn't anyone sane who goes off into the backcountry to do something fun, aka risky, without carrying an InReach now. Last wheeling trip I was on we had four in our group of five lol.

There should be pictures of them at this point if they were going to be highly visible at their final altitude. All we've seen is them deploying. At their final height is unlikely we will ever see them. Especially with his little sun shade. They are afterall 340 miles away.

    Point taken.

I could have been clearer. In their final positions, they might not be visible to the naked eye but, when sunlit, are in telescopes and binoculars. They show up in photographs.

With 12,000 to 40,000 planned, seems like there will always be some deploying or de-orbiting.

Any mitigation they can do is good.

Yeah. I have the inreach for 'normal' comms in the woods, and a PLB in case shit really hit the fan.

I mean, I could choose to carry neither .. but starlink doesn't change that in any way.

I remember when I was 15 going on a high adventure canoe trip in the wilderness above North Bay in Ontario Canada. Back then we didn’t have cell phones but our leaders had handheld ham radios in case of an emergency.
Fortunately, there was never any need to utilize them.

I used to go on mountain bike rides in the state preseves near my house. I'd ride several miles into the woods, sometimes with lights because it would get dark while I was out there. No cell phones then. I never really gave it much thought but if I had had an off and broken a collarbone or leg or worse, it might have been days until anyone came looking for me.

But I was young and invincible. I'm older now and carry a cellphone.

Cell service is still spotty in some wheeling spots up in central Pa.

Growing up there were no cell phones. Cb’s if they existed were vehicle bound.

Your options were smoke or three gunshots. Mostly, if you got lost or hurt you had to figure it out yourself.

I have found a motorcycle rider that went over the side of a hill and broke both legs, no cell signal. He had been there about 8 hours. Found another guy that rolled his suv down an embankment on a remote trail, he had been there for 12-20 hours, no cell signal. The best was when I found a old lady walking a trail preparing for a race in an area she had never been. No water, no cell(or signal on mine), and she couldn't keep up with the rando's she met out there doing the same. She had been lost for a few hours. There are a lot of people who go out with out skill, knowledge, or equipment to help them survive. People are under some fantasy that we have conquered the Earth, and many learn the hard way she was always in control. That said, I don't go out with an inreach, but I do have supplies and knowledge to help me survive if something should happen. EVERYONE should take at least a basic first aid course, especially if you have kids.

My best find was a drunk dirt biker who took off at dusk. Didn't come back to camp. Next morning we started searching. Found him and his bike down a vertical mine shaft. Probably flew close by a dozen times until we got right over the shaft and saw "something". Got him out. Bike may still be there.

I've seen that. Very difficult to look at.

I was in college at the time - I still remember where I was when I heard the news.

I remember watching the whole thing in my classroom with the rest of the class. We got sent home early that day if I recall correctly.

I was looking at the moon the other day and was wondering why we can see details like caters and mountains with our naked eye even though it’s a quarter million miles away, any ideas? Couldn’t find much on google. Like right now, I’m looking at a mountain about 10-20 miles away and can’t really make out anything other than the ridge-line

The size difference is what makes it possible. For example Tycho crater is 85km wide, Mare Serenitatis is 674km wide.
