I think they're being selective still with the Starlink beta. I know a guy whose really active on twitter, but farms in butt fuck nowhere, is getting one but none of his neighbours that signed up at the same time are.

Looks like this was the issue that aborted the Falcon 9 carrying the Air Force satellite in early October.
Seems like it only affects new engines, and after use they don’t have this risk.

What is this, a third gen?

 

A lot of times it's very little things that cause problems. We recently changed the size of a rivet hole at work for some drone parts. Turns out the rivets were not a true 1/16" and this allowed the part just enough wiggle room to eventually come out. So now we drill the hole 0.005" smaller...

 

So true. Last job I had was in aerospace and we used a certain lacquer to seal specific parts against corrosion. Started having tons of QA issues all the sudden.

Many, MANY days of record digging, researching, supplier calling, etc later turns out that lacquer is made from a bug somewhere in Africa. Well the area they were getting the bugs from got hit by a big tropical storm, so they go the bugs from an area like 20 miles away from the original site, no biggie. Well it turns out it has different fauna; so the Ph of the bugs that went into the lacquer was different and that's ultimately what caused the issue we were having.

 

And they will dig through every record you have, and God help you if they find an error...

Holy moly. That's messed up.

 

I work in aero too. The amount of large scale problems that lend themselves back to something so extraordinary like that is crazy. Some stuff is obvious (like corrosion being caused by the test stand being next to salt spray booth....), others not so much (like you talked about, the ph from the local area).

I’m in aero QA. That record digging is my job. It’s really cool when a customer will come back 10 years later and tell us there’s a problem and nobody can find records and I can pull something out of our records and tell them their other suppliers shouldn’t be in aerospace

we do some nuclear stuff. Peanuts but, records are 85 years for that. We do some stuff for rocketdyne. We do one part and the amount of QA that goes into it is insane.

 

I'm the money guy in the plant, and I always loved when an airframe was scrapped because the money we recouped from all the silver in the X-ray film for the parts that we had to keep on file wasn't insignificant.
