You'd think we'd (US Government) have noticed a big rocket exploding.

They've got away with a few before. It's not always in US interests either to tell the public their observation capabilities in China. Sometimes playing dumb is intentional on the international stage.

I wouldn't be surprised if china finds a way to steal Space-X's tech at some point to recover their own rockets. It certainly seems like they're on track to get a moon base started in the next 30 years. That's what a "long term stay" would mean that their rocket is designed for. Meanwhile we're just sitting around...

They might lose some lives getting there, but thing is...they are more willing to accept that risk than us I think and just deal with it if it happens.

I serviced some equipment at the Arecibo telescope back in 2011. As luck would have it they were having a 2 week maintenance shutdown and I was allowed to tour the entire structure, even into the gregorian dome suspended in the center. I'll never forget it, the size of it alone was awe inspiring. Even back then they were having to scrounge for budget money to keep things going. Lots of good and dedicated people there. I do hope they can find a way forward.

Thank you for sharing your experience, that must have been amazing! I don’t think I could ever imagine the size of something weighing 900 tons suspended 500 feet above that huge structure. As I said before, this has local connection to my wife (alumni of UCF) and our city of Orlando.
    Absolutely saddened that it’s gone.

True indeed. And without the welcome help of the UCF I think it might have not been around as long as it was.

Doesn't need a ton of stealing. Homebuilt model rocket peeps have figured how to do a hoverslam.

It's mostly a business model concern at this point. Either you commit to cheap reuse, or you go with your 'proven tech' method.

Apparently it was just another LOX pressure test of the SN8

No raptor light. Michael with NSF said that they probably won't do another static fire because it would stress the test stand to the failure point.
