I'd get the Flight Engineer mod since it gives you statistics you should really have to begin with such as vehicle delta-v during the design phase (and flight) as well as flight data.

It's by no means required though.

10-4, thanks. I've just fiddled around and discovered that the difficulty curve is that of a one-man real life NASA operation, so anything will help.

I'd recommend doing a career mode game which the "career mode" is pretty basic but limits your tech until you unlock stuff in the tech tree, but it kind of guides the learning a bit by restricting stuff.

Ah, okay. I was working through the tutorials, and my mind was blowing with all the modules and other pieces you can throw onto your rocket. The controls are quite elusive as well. I'm sure I'll get familiar with everything... but I wish a manual had come included lol.

First rocket almost made it to orbit, and then exploded upon impact when it had a collision with the ground.

Second rocket just said to hell with me and blew up on the pad.

    That happens, alot

    http://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Key_bindings

The big thing is the SAS, press T to toggle that on and off, and hold 'F' to turn it off or on temporarily. SAS tries to maintain the set heading of the rocket though you can move it around with the WASD QE keys while SAS is on. It's success depends on the rocket's design such as total mass, balance, if the engines can vector (the first liq fuel engine cannot).

Always balance your rockets in the design phase.

    That's called lithobraking :D

The game has a difficulty curve that's basically a vertical wall lol. Just need to trudge through it and get used to every thing. Like Muffin said start off in career mode it will you make your ships way better and it gives you small steps to ease yourself into every thing.

Tbh I would avoid the Engineer mods to start off. I think it's just going to make things more confusing with all of the added data. I usually just calculate the D/V by hand anyways.
