Not only was the shuttle a rocket, it's engines were firing right along side it's booster's engines and were required to get to space. It is also the only rocket to actually go to orbit and return to earth to be reused.

This is what I expect Spacex or a Spacex customer to do within a few years of Starship being proven. With each rocket being within 10-20% of the ISS's volume, and nearly tripling it if they drain and convert the fuel tanks once in orbit, they could dock 24-50+ to a center docking hub version of starship depending how close they trust their software to dock with other rockets/pods. Dock 2 center hubs together and fill them up with rockets and have 50-150 times the volume of ISS for much much less. Now you have a Spacex hotel in orbit, and the beginning of space tourism. And with them talking about ideas like traveling anywhere on Earth for the cost of a first class ticket, travelling to this could be an achievable bucket list dream by many of us within our lifetime.

*this was 5-10 minutes of modeling, but the dimensions should be very close. Fine details though, not so much.

Seeing Dragon (Cargo and Crew) are completely autonomous, I don’t think software will be an issue.

Interesting proposal, operational Starship gonna be a trip.. There’s gonna be all sorts of applications .

It might be large enough to do that, might still be too small. Too small of a diameter and your head and feet will travel at different speeds and you'll feel like you're riding a gravitron. I don't remember how big a radius it had to be for you to not feel those effects though. I think they'll probably keep it zero g though. Most likely rent space out to institutes, manufacturers, government agencies, and eccentric millionaires at first. Then once we see the new field, private astronaut construction technician guy, we'll see ring sections for gravity for normal bathrooms, cooking, etc.

For any length of time I would want the option of both.

    Ahhh Haaa!

Solid Rocket Boosters not Solid Shuttle Boosters means the Shuttle was a rocket :D

So I guess what you are saying is Space Shuttle is NOT a rocket in the same way the Command Module of the Saturn V is NOT a rocket.

If we're going to talk about rocket-assist, what do we call a C-130 with JATO bottles on it? :p

For those who may not know, JATO stands for Jet Assisted Take Off. If you have never seen a C-130 take off with jet assist, you NEED to!

I went to an air show at Miramar back in the 90s. Was lucky enough to be there on Friday, the practice day.

Not too many people - awesome time!

Now we just have to calculate the diameter of what @2008taco modeled for us.

Except the crew compartments are on the top - most of that is tankage required to get starship into orbit.

So then Starship is not a rocket either. It will have to ride along with the Super Heavy Booster, which is just a giant fuel tank, in order to get into orbit.
