Kind of. That is what makes this country what it is. It's attracts talented people. Take that billionaire south African immigrant Elon Musk for example. He took the trillions in research that NASA had done, and then did some more himself. Now space access is cheaper, and soon may be even cheaper. And in the process he is directly employing 10's of thousands of people and indirectly employing 10s if not 100's of thousands more. Try to find that in countries that don't spend tax dollars on research. It is an investment into the country, aka nationalism. And if you really dig into it, most people making under 50k/yr are actually tax negative, the rich pay more overall.

You also have to remember that in the past there ere very few people who could even afford to think about crazy things like rockets. In 1982 there were only 15 billionaires according to Forbes. Now there are 614 in the USA alone.

To my wife, “Honey, I’ve lost the cars, house and every penny we’ve saved.”

Her, “WHAT! Are you into drugs? Gambling?”

Me, “Nothing like that. See, this guy posted a link on TacomaWorld to an online auction that had a ton of astronaut memorabilia….”

Terrific site, thanks for posting it Mike

These are the areas where the current level of AI would shine. Program a drone to photograph every beam, and then a computer to analyze the photos. It would beat the guy who drove up to the bridge, said yep it's still there must be good, and then drove off.

I know people that are doing this in the rail industry. Article doesn't mention AI or anything, but they are working on autonomous detection for a lot of defects.

A majority of the AI in use today is just pattern recognition. Show it 100,000 images, click yes on the images with the properties you want it to alert you to, and no on the others, and then give it a camera feed. It will still give you false positives, but the more it is used, the better it becomes. Then all you have to do is grab a drone, program it to fly around bridges, Stream/download it's camera to the computer running the AI (most of which could be done autonomously), and then fire the incompetent human inspectors. Saving lives AND tax payer dollars!!! This is also what Spacex will likely do for heat tile inspection after a landing of Starship. Could do the whole ship in minutes, and be better/more reliable than humans doing it.

Or, hell! Just use the drone for live inspection. Train the inspector how to fly it and use a high quality camera. That's just as good as going out on the inspection equipment.

So you use an AI drone and it finds all of the flaws. At some point a human has to take action. Whether you have a lazy inspector or a lazy administrator the results can be the same.

    From the NSF write up:

This is a historic flight, not just for Virgin Galactic and their ambitions to take paying passengers on a suborbital flight, but for the state of New Mexico as well. Previously, only the Kyzylorda Region (Kzyl Ordinskaya oblast) in Kazakhstan, Florida, California, and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China had hosted human launches to space.

Didn’t the X-15 flights originate from California? Aren’t they now considered suborbital?
