It looked tiny until it showed the oil platform.

I never researched but the other night while gazing up at the night sky; well sometimes you can see a satellite orbiting. Sometimes going one direction but some go the other direction. Guess I figured if they was up there in orbit that they would all go the same way, earth's rotation. o_O

Nope! Most non-polar orbits go posigrade (with rotation) to take advantage of thr Earth's gift of rotational speed but rockets have been powerful enough for a few decades to launch retrograde (against rotation). That said, there are orbits that range between 0 & 90° inclination (angle from equator).

All sorts of orbits going on up there.

For satellite I.D., this is one of my favorite sites:
    https://heavens-above.com/main.aspx

There’s other sites and apps too.

I may have a app on my phone, one that I got short time ago, have to check. It was something to do with time the ISS is visible.

Scott Manley does some very intelligent videos on space subjects. This is his one on the recent Hubble computer/memory issues:

Then there’s the geostationary ones like weather sats that stay over one spot and rotate in concert with the earths spin.

Those are orbiting.. just at a speed/altitude where their height over ground is stationary.

    ...

Re: platform fire.. man I did not miss the deepwater horizon spill stuff. They'd better not recall me for that shit either.

Yup, same angular velocity as the earth and actual velocity 2xPIxR/24 hrs. (R=distance to earth’s center).

Likewise . . . from ICT. PO'd, this B29 flew over my house low enough to rattle my brain but I was out in the shop without a means of pic taking. But was still a rush. I'd love to ride on it but $600-1500 is a bit beyond my budget.

Amazing how many Americans get this wrong. Although we declared our independence in 1776, it wasn’t granted until the Treaty of Paris in 1783. And went into effect in May of 1784.

So our actual independence day is May 2, 1784. Almost 8 years later.

It was granted when Americans decided they were Americans and not citizens of the British Empire. The treaty was just a formal acknowledgement from the British crown that they lost the war.
