I lost a ton of respect for Colonel Hadfield when he pinned "Astronaut Wings" on Branson and his amusement ride passengers.

 

Yes, “real astronauts” actually do something when they get up there but for all of them, “real” or not, it’s the same ride up. Nobody pilots these things to orbit. The tourists just get to skip the work that happens in orbit. I liken those badges to the wings kids used to get when flying an airliner. The badge only has whatever meaning the wearer earns.

 

I hear ya. I thought his participation in the pre-flight show was a bit cringeworthy…. But, I’m sure it was financially worth it…

As for the wings, both VG and BO make their own wings for spaceflight participants. VG’s is on the left here:

No one pilots the BO.

There’s a flight crew for the VG and they have earned their FAA Commercial Astronaut wings. The passengers are considered Spaceflight Participants and are not entitled to FAA Wings.

I understand the reasoning for spreading government contracts around and I understand industry's needing to sell unrealistic schedules to secure said contracts, yada yada yada but both seem to have their share of mud on their faces over there. Rightly so, imo.
