If you haven’t seen Scott M’s video on this launch, consider taking a few minutes…

Certainly, but I seriously doubt they proceeded as they did without confidence regardless of the circumstances. Obviously that particular red light was not one of the “you are about to explode, kiss your ass good bye” variety mentioned in the meetings. At this distance I’m not inclined to jump to conclusions. As with the slideways rocket launch, aborting isn’t always the best immediate option. Not panicking and making judgment calls is what separates crew from passengers.

Hard to draw conclusions from a single article, however I stand by my original snarky statement. I think having Branson on board and the amount of publicity impacted pretty much every major decision during the flight.

Not disputing that at all. There’s a big difference though between the space plane they flew and a rocket with no controls, just a big red “oh shit” button. They were pilots with controls and decided to use them rather than abort. What separates good pilots from good test pilots is knowing when to punch out and when not to. I think it’s a case where their natural inclination was reinforced by the publicity factor but I seriously doubt they would have hesitated even for an instant if the situation were truly dire.
