I would think a dedicated mission to park a relay satellite at the Earth-Sun L4 or L5 (or the Mars-Sun L4/L5) would do the trick but then again, it would cost a bit.

Maybe when SpaceX settles Mars and the few weeks of blacked out comms would not be acceptable.

I don't think it would have to be a dedicated mission. More like a box they throw out the back of the rocket as it is traveling to Mars.

I doubt they could spare the mass/volume for something that would need to maneuver to a stable solar orbit in the void. There’s no conveniently placed gravity well that stays either 90 degrees ahead or behind earth orbit to park it around. With no planet to anchor it it will need fuel to stay on station after being perturbed. Getting there is easy, stopping and staying put isn’t.

Agree with the stationkeeping issues you point out but the relay wouldn’t need to be at 90 degrees.

    L4/L5 would suffice.

Richest man in the world crying “it’s not fair!” What a joke. And he’s determined to make everyone lose by it, how “fair” is that?

Hearing that a shutdown would not stop Lucy from launching. Ive been wrong before and I'll be wrong again though.

    That’s sounds like a sane decision…. Thanks.
