I meant an addition meaning they bolt it to the existing ISS.

In addition, it would be up in orbit as a separate space station.

Replace, they decommission the ISS and deorbit once the Axiom station is in orbit and functional.

    Ahhh, gotcha.

I think there’s all sorts of possibilities being discussed. Hard to find a concise link right now but some of it includes:
    - Russia going on their own or hooking up w China
    - Axiom building out their station while attached to the ISS then separating
    - NASA privatizing the remaining portions of the ISS for commercial ventures
    - controlled deorbit of the whole kit and kaboodle.

    There probably other scenarios.

    Root around here- amazing stuff

No mention of Capt Kirk's ride this morning?
Oh yeah, this is the Space and Science thread, that was neither, just a 9 minute carnival ride.

More than that but less than orbital. They should have a Kilroy was here logo for peeking into space complete with matching swag.

I suppose there are better candidates for that logo but it did seem appropriate.

    Yes.

it's AN addition, adds capability in addtion, and will in the long term replace it once more modules are built.

EDIT - So, have we partnered with the Russians for long enough that all their competent engineers have retired yet? I mean, it's not like we're preventing China et. al. from procuring modern rocket technologies by keeping former Soviet rocket scientists employed, so there's that excuse out the window.
EDIT 2 - And I say that knowing it was probably a pretty good decision to make at the time, just not sure it's still applicable. Also, would NOT want to be riding that soyuz home o_0

I think it’s embedded in the Russian mindset.

Same kind of shit happened with MIR.

The Russian culture does not focus on the "what if's". They build something, and if it works they'll keep using it until it doesn't. This makes progress happen really fast, but incidents are more likely to happen.

It's actually very similar to how SpaceX does r&d. But they focus on safety a little more.

And then there’s the $$$ (or lack thereof) side of the discussion
