Another interesting future space-related technology in the movie. In the Toyota 2000GT a moving map in a car. Something that only happened decades later with GPS and significant advances in electronics. As a fun GPS note - the the first GPS signal was received out on the NTS-2 (Navigation Technology Satellite) on July 19, 1977.

Works for me. I wonder how long it will be before it’s a union job. And where would they picket?

If it's a small enough rocket this method could be less weight than chutes would be. Same with the legs. Hydraulics and all the systems involved could be more weight than just sticking them out and dealing with the drag. Less room for error with landing though. We eve seen SpaceX take some hard landing and survive only because of the legs moving. And we've seen some landings that were a bit too hard.

Fixed may not mean they can’t absorb any impact, might just mean that they don’t fold away. A shock absorber might weigh less than a completely fixed leg built to a high enough impact standard plus the fuel to slow it a little bit more.

Yes, inside the perimeter. See the pic midway down here:

I guess it’s gonna be an ‘improvement’ from the Boca Chica design.

I know this was a while ago but to answer this, no. Depending on the launch vehicle shock loads are normally driven (aka highest) by the clampband release and not the “vibrating rocket” so a deployment is going to be your worst case. I don’t know how they how they tested JWST but normally you’ll test by actually deploying a spacecraft on an air table or something that simulates zero g for small stuff or on a vibe table that simulates those inputs for bigger spacecraft. The important point here is that you are inputting the loads into the base of the spacecraft where it’s designed to take them. Since JWST didn’t fall over (thank god) it was almost certainly attached to a holding or lifting fixture when it happened. So now you have a bad shock event going into the base but ALSO loads wherever you’re attached to the fixture. That means you have significant loads into the spacecraft in ways it was never designed for, hence having to do analysis to see if it’s ok.
