At least with the steel it can become an artificial reef. Maybe the tiles will help with that too. But in the end SpaceX is one of the few doing something about it. Sure they may do some littering now, but their goal is for it to eventually not crash, blow up, and leave a bunch of debris.

The rabbit hole that is the human condition. If we could do that I’d have real hope but few seem to recognize Petri dish earth for what it is.

I look at it like this. There is nothing we can do to truly destroy it. It may become uninhabitable for us, but a few thousand years later life will be striving again.

Not even then. Nuclear weapons are blown out of proportion in what they can do. There have been 2,600 nuclear weapons detonated, and in everyone of those sites life has survived, many it's even flourished. The Earth would change for sure, billions of people and animals would perish, but literally only a few hundred years later the Earth would look like a paradise.

Yup, if nuclear weapons were as terrible as extremists claim, then Hiroshima and Nagasaki would be uninhabitable wastelands instead of major cities right now.

Call me selfish but I thought the whole point of survival was surviving. If we’re no longer around because of our own behavior that would be the ultimate Darwin Award. Sure the future will still be there but no dreams of the future without dreamers. The great filter may be why seti has not found anything.

Apocalypse stories all assume lack of civilization left to rebuild. It took work to rebuild those cities or they would still be uninhabited. The very real and indisputable long term effect wasn’t in buildings that can be rebuilt or trees that can be replanted in soil brought in by trucks but in the lives lost and affected by genetic damage. Lots of things besides radiation can do permanent damage to humans and we work very hard to try them all. Just ask the clean up crews after 9/11 if you don’t want to believe the Japanese or our veterans.

All I'm saying is that there is little we could do to actually turn this planet into a lifeless rock. Just launching all the nukes or dumping oil into the ocean won't do it. We would need that to be the goal of humanity with the entirety of the species working on it.

But seriously... How many above ground tests were there?
A couple years ago the som of a guy I know was in college, studying engineering and he in total seriousness told me that if we have another nuclear explosion above ground, even a single one, we absolutely will have a nuclear winter.
    They be teaching crazy now.

And no, I am not in any way at all advocating any use for nuclear weapons whatsoever.

The big rock that wiped out the dinosaurs had far more power than anything humanity could come up with, and yet life persisted.
Sure sucked to be a dinosaur back then though...

Speaking of which, I wonder how the wx will be after the Tonga eruption this year.

Sure - I mean I wouldn't eat dirt from the Trinity site but it's safe enough to visit. Most of the irradiation and energy is going to be directed upwards, though, and most of the destructive power is from the shock wave, not the radiation.
