I agree.

I know a few guys who know it. Triangulation and all that.

Not sure if still applies, but was a time you had to be proficient in it to earn a Captains license.

 

My wife and I were just looking to the west at Venus and Jupiter over the top of our house with the moon rising while shining bright to our east ... awesome

 

Its all GPS now but even the enlisted back in the day / if you wanted a coxswain certificate you had to know how to use a sextant .

 

There are a couple of C130 variants that I have been around that have a small hatch on top of the aircraft (opens from the inside of the aircraft) where a sextant can be used by the navigator while on the flight deck to plot a course during night operations on a cloudless night ... not sure how it works but when the hatch is opened (aircraft is unpressurized at the time) the sextant can be inserted through the hole and secured... somehow the navigator can figure out the aircraft's position

Even though these are photos from an observatory, this is the only example I could find that could have been seen without high powered telescopes which weren't available when Jesus was born

Read the story and you'll find a series of supernatural events ... quite extraordinary

 

A supernova when it happens can be bright enough to be seen with the naked eye , during the day , depending on it's size and proximity to Earth of course

A supernova isn't a supernatural event but neither is the " Star of Bethlehem " planetary conjunction currently happening

The last supernova that was visible was located in 1987 according to the article

"In early 1987, those in the southern hemisphere were rewarded with the first naked eye supernova since that seen by Kepler in the 16th century."

I meant the "story" that is found in the books of the gospel ... should have made that clear

That solar plane and the folks behind it are very cool. I remember reading the book about Rutan Voyager; no way would I want to be cooped up in a tiny cockpit for that kind of time!
