Can't imagine it's really that much different than it is for someone in like Hawaii, where Mecca is basically directly through the planet. Also, I would hope a 'good faith' effort at pointing in the right direction would satisfy, but it's not really my area of expertise.

Wouldn't someone in Hawai'i face either directly west or directly east? :notsure:

If they were going shortest distance, they'd probably face north, given that both are in the northern hemisphere, and are nearly opposite in longitude. If the same rules then apply if you're a few kilometers up on a mountain, would they then also apply when you're a few-hundred kilometers up in orbit? When Mecca is on the other side of the world, you just face the point on the horizon closest to it? Or do you face yourself absolutely towards it, even through the center of the Earth?

Edit - sounds like they thought this through, and went with the 'good faith effort is good enough' approach.

Yeah, see. Those are the kinds of questions that I think about, but I certainly don't let them keep me up at night.

When on the surface you face the direction you’d travel on the surface. Until we can bore the core I’d assume the same applies when above it. Any great circle that includes Mecca would do.

It was actually about 8 days of refurbishing, the rest was transport, so if it had landed on base, it would have been about 9 days launch to launch

    Rocket Lab YT is up…

    https://youtu.be/6nODVPGHQcc

This is their first attempt to catch a booster

Edit: They said they caught it. We saw a glimpse of it just before it was but nothing after. The commentator didn’t mention if they were going to televise the drop off.

That’s pretty crazy, thanks for sharing. Makes you wonder how much relative delta-v you can obtain within the length of the pressurized space, if you “tuck and roll” just right.
Also, yeah, sometimes I stop getting notifications for threads, no idea how that happens.
