The problem with discussion on this topic is that in general you have one side that says yes it's happening , here are peer reviewed articles full of scientific data that supports the summary that indeed the climate is changing , the Earth as a whole is in a warming trend and man is a contributor to that change . On the other side , the rebuttal usually comes in the form of an Al Gore meme , an opinion piece from IHateObama.org or the good ole " I stuck my head out the window and it's cold here in Bumbfuck USA so the whole Earth must be cold too " , also known as Senator Inhofe's Congressional Snowball Genesis 8:22

That's all for now, but it'll be months before all the data is downlinked due to the crazy low bitrate that far out though I'm sure by the end of the week they'll have more cool shots.

 

Yeah they said the download rate was around 600-1200 bits per second lol.

That comes out to 2 hours to download a simple cell phone image.

 

I watched the Nat Geo special on the Pluto mission last night , pretty amazing what they did just to get the spacecraft in a position to get photos at all

 

You think New Horizons got enough evidence to turn Pluto back into a planet?

 

No. Though it'll always be a planet to me.

Someone at the IAU just needed a reason to make headlines I think and they didn't want to change a bunch of text books when they started discovering small planets.

 

one of the characteristics of a planet is being able to clear a debris field around it. ex no other objects are in earths orbital path around the sun. I believe since pluto is not massive enough and has 5 moons that are relatively close disqualify it from being a planet and they designate it a dwarf planet. also I believe there are other smaller objects in plutos orbital path. Also why Ceres is considered a dwarf planet because it exists in the asteroid belt with other objects in its orbital path.

What I am more interested in is the question if they are going to classify Charon as dwarf planet. and if so it will be the first Binary planet system we know of.

Also side note, whats everyones take on the mysterious lights on Ceres?

 

Also they believe pluto may have a lot of water ice present on it. Which speaks volumes to the amount of water we believe is distributed in the universe. It may be more abundant than we have estimated before if that's the case. Which means life being even more likely to exist elsewhere.
