I'm curious as to the DV that it imparts and how long it takes it to reenter!

Obviously these are documented and it's choreographed so as to avoid colliding with any known satellites or current debris.

My understanding is the halo orbit they’re shooting for is quite different from the more or less circular equatorial or even polar orbits. Taken from a search:

The "near-rectilinear halo orbit" planned for CAPSTONE and NASA's Gateway lunar space station comes within 1,000 miles of the moon's north pole with a high point of some 43,000 miles above the south polar region. Spacecraft in this orbit will never pass behind the moon as seen from Earth, allowing continuous communications.”

    Thanks :hattip:.

I found the wiki page on CAPSTONE helpful. The section on ‘Ballistic Lunar Transfer’ and link in that section on ‘ballistic transfer’ especially so.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPSTONE

CAPSTONE is going 1.5 million kilometers beyond the moon to fall back towards the moon into the NRHO you described with no to very little delta-v required. Hence the 4 month timeframe.

It’ll be interesting to see how this evolves in the future.

Will Gateway components take 4 months to get into that orbit?

For supporting the first crewed mission to the station (Artemis 3) planned for 2025, the Gateway will be a minimalistic mini-space station composed of only two modules: the Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) and the Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO).[42][43] Both PPE and HALO will be assembled on Earth and launched together on a Falcon Heavy in November 2024,[1] and they are expected to reach lunar orbit after nine to ten months.[44]

Can’t imagine crewed flights taking that long.
Spacecraft launched from Earth would perform a powered flyby of the Moon (delta-v ≈ 180 m/s) followed by a ≈240 m/s delta-v NRHO insertion burn to dock with the Gateway as it approaches the apoapsis point of its orbit. The total travel time would be 5 days; the return to Earth would be similar in terms of trip duration and delta-v requirement if the spacecraft spends 11 days at the Gateway.

Will there be some sort of hybrid transfer with much more delta-v? Yes, see above.

Back to wiki for me :D (Edits: original post in regular font, italics = edits from what I found on wiki. Thought others might be interested.)

Maybe it’s only because it was done on the ISS. The unwritten rules being only applied to things said or done groundside. It did seem a flagrant foul though and I’m glad they were called on it. Roscosmos(i.e. Putin) doesn’t seem much concerned with maintaining relations with western powers.

Thanks, that explains the how/why such an odd ballistic approach is needed to achieve the equally odd orbit and why it’s not just a brute force orbital insertion as the time critical manned missions will be(and so why the Proton rocket couldn’t simply drop it into orbit). Nice to see such creativity being applied as they learn more tricks about orbital mechanics.

You’re welcome. Funny how the brain works but it finally clicked for me regarding the ballistic transfer.

Thanks for helping me figure it out

140th overall I'm guessing. Not 140 for OCISLY
