I mean, if successful starship is 90% the volume of the ISS... After 2024 the ISS will start to look like a dingy when compared to what's possible. Meanwhile Russia's current rocket sends astronauts up in a sardine tin.

And that’s what the Chinese modeled theirs after

I would expect Russia to be second fiddle in any future station.

This is something that I was wondering about the other day. Isn't the human usable volume only about a third of the ship? If that is the case, is it still 90% of the volume of the ISS? Or is that claim based on the entirety of Starship including the prop tanks?

Per Wikipedia, the claimed payload volume is 1000 m^3. You’d lose a lot of that if you turned it into “people” space, but one starship would still be a large fraction of the internal volume of ISS.

I just read, per Wikipedia, that the ISS has 915.5686 m^3, so I guess that checks out.

That's just payload volume. If you wet workshop the fuel tanks it's more than 3X the volume of the ISS.

Reminds me of a scifi series I read that used spent orbiter external tanks as the basis for the new space station.

Kim Stanley Robinson used that in Red Mars, at least. Definitely a product of early Space Shuttle era optimism, but absolutely worth a read. On a related note, it's really interesting how the launch technology of the time affects what is portrayed as being possible 20-30 years in the 'future' in sci-fi. Plot points in The Martian around launch scarcity don't hold up in the Falcon 9 era, for example.

I can't remember the name of the books, but I think it was suggested in here as a series Elon might have read as inspiration for SpaceX. Basically, a rich woman gets concerned about asteroids hitting earth and basically single-handedly creates space exploration in the late 90's to early 00's. Everything from education on up to space construction and micro-gravity manufacturing.
