From what I understood, Orion will launch to Gateway, be refueled from Starship tankers, continue to the moon where HLS will be waiting in the polar orbit. Then the astronauts will transfer from Orion to HLS for their 6.5 day mission. Then do it all in reverse to come back to Earth.

I don’t think Gateway is going to be in place (or if it is, be used) for the first HLS landing.

Gateway, theoretically launched by SLS, will be in lunar orbit (a polar orbit). Orion will fly to Gateway, dock, transfer astronauts to HLS, then descend to the lunar surface.

The question is how will the HLS get to Gateway?

    I agree.

NASA really wants it to, but so much time is required to build and test new hardware, and the powers that be are very impatient to get back on to the surface of the moon.

I'm guessing they will end up a system similar to the Saturn V / Lunar Module of the Apollo days - at least for the first landing.

I didn’t mean to imply that. I’m thinking if Starship Skeleton is a one way trip to stay on the moon, it’ll be launched on a Booster, refueled as as many times as necessary, make it’s trip and hopefully land successfully. Whether SpaceX has other supports or experiments on it is up to them.

There’s been no backing off by NASA on the Starship HLS and no back up approved for development, right? Did anything come of the Round 2 lander bs from a while ago?

Ah, I was not thinking that (obviously). Interesting idea.

I assume, if it is on the lunar surface, it could launch and dock up to Gateway. Someday..

I have not heard anything recently.

Last I heard, NASA was planning to open up the contract for ideas/bids for HLS. Not sure if that was due to Bezo's lawsuit, or they wanted more than one supplier.

HLS is a Starship with white paint and the NASA worm logo. It will get there the same way any Starship will get to space, on top of a Booster.

The 5 T-38's flew by during the fueling op yesterday, the Nasa test conductor knew they were coming and told the scapers. Few of them turned to the south and waved or saluted as they passed.

Yes involved in final closeouts. I may be on the ml tower Sunday to do some final checks.
