Cool light placard. I like how it pivots to the side.

    Nope, here's an official video.

    https://mars.nasa.gov/mars2020/multimedia/videos/?v=429

It might, but it's also a super thin atmosphere and things are going to be weird and different anyway.

Weird, the video shows the rotors having the same angle of attack and rotation but the website clearly shows them opposite. I think someone fubarred the video or the design was changed. I’m leaning towards the first since it would autorotate as soon as it left the ground otherwise without a tail rotor.
Edit- my bad. The video does show counter rotation.

Yeah, it’s crazy how much it slows down. Watch it speed up as it moves away from the Moon and gets more deeply into the Earths pull :rocket:. (I wish Bob could splurge on some more emojis for this thread :D)

I still want to see a 3D cg representation showing Orion from the time it leaves the atmosphere on including the relative motions of the earth, moon, and Orion along with the velocity changes but in a time lapse. It would really highlight the moving target aspects along with the dramatic changes in velocity. 2D orbit loops and fixed participants just don’t do justice to the dance.

It’s not an auto gyro after all.

Nothing to do with auto gyros. An autorotation has nothing to do with a helicopter spinning in circles.

Well, an auto gyro flies by autorotation.

Autorotation is a state of flight in which the main rotor system of a helicopter or other rotary-wing aircraft turns by the action of air moving up through the rotor, as with an autogyro, rather than engine power driving the rotor.[1][2][3] The term autorotation dates to a period of early helicopter development between 1915 and 1920, and refers to the rotors turning without the engine.[4] It is analogous to the gliding flight of a fixed-wing aircraft. Autorotation has also evolved to be used by certain trees as a means of disseminating their seeds further.”

The last thread lasted over nine years before it got screwed up. Be a nerd and talk about nerd stuff without the politics. We can discuss the science and technological benefits and drawbacks to anything without needing to bring politics into the matter.

Are you new here or something? Discussing diesel engines and (the lack of) rear disk brakes resulted in a religious jihad.

If I die from a virus with the scientific name megavirus mammoth I’ll be ok with it.

There are some pretty cool discoveries coming out from areas of melting permafrost. Hopefully it remains interesting science and not a global extinction by aliens frozen in iced over spaceships.
