My understanding is that the core stage is already almost complete and that the capsule is built but remains to be fitted out. The engines (2 old and 2 brand new) are sitting waiting to be installed. No idea where things stand with the ESA service module but it’s entirely new since the current one will be jettisoned before reentry. I expect the usual slow march to repair the tower but it does seem the computers are the main critical path components. It won’t be until A4 that the upgrade to block 1B happens so they may keep dragging their feet on the second mobile platform to see if Starship can surpass Artemis. I really don’t know. Given their recent preference for multiple ventures it wouldn’t surprise me to see them hang onto Artemis despite the cost. Assuming Orion passes it’s reentry final exam they’ll probably proclaim a huge success and continue as planned. What’s ironic about the whole thing us the decision to not buy 3 sets of computers might have saved them some money upfront it will probably end up costing them up to an extra billion after delays. But then, originally there were only going to be 2 block 1 missions instead of 3. This is all internet gleanings so take it with the usual grains of salt but it did seem pretty reliable.

Anyone know why they plan to drop Starship near Hawaii? It would almost certainly float for some time so why not allow it to make a more complete orbit and ditch near one of the service ships and tow it back to port Canaveral?

Here’s my guess - that way if it breaks up on re-entry no harm no foul, just more debris in the Pacific, rather than debris over the eastern US. And I’m betting they’ll try to hover it at some reasonably high altitude (100-1000 ft or some such) then cut the engines, so when it hits the water there’s no way it stays in large enough pieces to float and cause damage.

This thread will be opened back up....on Friday sometime. What's the point of shutting one thread down and then allowing you all to just start another? Threads merged.

Self police is my suggestion moving forward after Friday.
