For my entire life (Late Boomer), we've been "30 years away" from harnessing nuclear fusion for commercial energy production.

Does this mean we are more like 20 years away or still 30?

I'm not sure fusion is even the best way for limitless green energy. NPR had a story a while back on deep well thermal that would accomplish the same thing and they are (reportedly) about ready to demonstrate the microwave drilling technology that would be needed to drill the 9 mile deep wells required. The thought here is that at that depth you could generate high temperature steam anywhere on the planet....like right next to that coal fired or NG fired power plant you built 20 years ago. Allowing you to repower the turbines already there and just eliminate the whole fuel requirement.

Holy crap, that's genius. Iceland has already proven how reliable those steam plants are.

I really really hope we can nail down fusion energy. I think that's one of the first steps to get us up a rung on the Kardeshev scale.

Solar power and a storage battery is a "free" energy machine for the average guy.

Count me as unexcited on fusion. I'm sure in 30 years it will only be 30 years away. And, I hope I'm wrong, and I support the spending on fusion research. In the meantime I'll continue using the big fusion generator in the sky to power my house.

@Hunterdc1 I realize you're off right now, so you might not have an answer. Without going into specifics, how bad is the SLS Mobile Launcher damaged after the launch?

Meh, we’ll see what they gotta say. More energy out than in is a good start. Feasibility is always the issue.
