a question: if the universe is expanding...as is generally accepted to be fact...then why do all the stars remain in the same place relative to each other..ie...the constellations. A opposed to moving farther apart from each other as they would if everything was in fact expanding. Think of points on the surface of a balloon as the balloon was being blown up...those points would get farther apart from each other as the balloon expands. Anyone?

Expansion is slow in decade, century or 10,000 year, even Million year scale, and stars in constellations are in our galaxy, which isn't expanding.

That's actually what I thought...just wanted to kinda "independently confirm". I guess on the same idea...(2) galaxies WOULD be "seen" moving away from each other in the balloon fashion I described above. Assuming as you mentioned, I had a million years to plot positions points.

But the balloon is also full of galaxies, they aren't all at the edge. Precise telescopes can see changes, but they have to look right through the relatively stable Milky Way stars to see them galaxies.

I also stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Just give me a heads up and let me know when that galaxy up yonder is about to crash into our galaxy. It's hell trying to find a new shack in this area and I'll need to move.

    Badump bomp,,,crash!.

Got our money back on that piece of hardware. I think it should be brought back. Fire up Salvage 1 and airbag it back.

The Shuttle could return the Hubble to earth based on downmass figures on Wikipedia. I was hoping they'd bring it back before the shuttle was retired but oh well.

That is amazing...but as is always the case...storing data is only half the battle...the ability to retrieve/read it is the other half. For example, I had dozens of 8mm video tapes. The recorder also served as the playback device. Well...the recorder broke, leaving no way to play the tapes back. Luckily, I was able to transfer the tapes to CD format. Then PC's started eliminating CD players...I expect those to be totally gone in a few years. So I copied them from CD on to my PC...so they get backed up with all my other data. Long winded way to make my point, but I think you get the idea.
