Darker colors tend to be better at both attracting and emitting radiation, so that could be part of it, trying to dump heat that way. Guessing since they're headed to the south pole, they're less worried about 'ambient' ground temperatures heating them up via IR, since it gets much less light than the Apollo landing sites did.

All depends if they can make money. Bezos' is barely giving them enough to stay in business which is why they appear to be going so slow. He's giving them upkeep money when they need R&D money. And the people he's hired are the old timers who are used to money being given to them every year with no expectations of accountability, so they spend accordingly.

I think all of these scenarios are plausible.

It amazes me BO has been around a year longer than SpX..

NASA and by extension the military and legislative branches REALLY do not want to be dependent upon a single launch provider but because of the lack of fulfillment elsewhere as well as the cost discrepancy NASA pretty much had to award HLS to Spacex. But they’re still trying to promote the competition whenever and however they can. New Shephard was a black eye but thankfully an unmanned one so damage to the public image was not surprisingly slight. Compare the number of uncrewed launches of F9 prior to the first Crew Dragon with New Shephard, 84 to 15. Spacex assumes at least that many and probably more will be needed before Starship is crew certified. It begs the question why did BO get by with so few before getting approved for crewed flights?

Because theirs is a very simple rocket that debatably doesn't make it to space and doesn't take NASA astronauts. It's a rich guy's rollercoaster.

Shouldn’t make a difference. It’s a commercial vehicle. This smeared egg on the FAA’s face.

New Shepard is a single stage, single engine suborbital rocket posing little risk to anyone except the passengers.

Crew dragon is a 10 engine, 2 stage orbital rocket posing danger to passengers and civilians worldwide as it is capable of orbit, and therefore falling out of orbit anywhere on earth. Its also capable of impacting and damaging satellites. Therefore it requires more scrutiny.

That be-3 engine is slated to find its way to orbit. I’m sure it’s getting more scrutiny now. Hopefully they did enough failure analysis on the be-4 to find any flaws.

In what way? The escape system functioned as designed after the rocket failed.
