Yup, your memory is correct

It’s gonna be wild to see if Starship can bleed off enough speed for the amount of fuel in those header tanks to be enough!

I think it would be far more cool to raise it to a far higher orbit. Place it somewhere so it ends up being an old relic that can be explored and scavenged by future space goers, possibly those flying Firefly class ships.

Most of the mass is gone so a lot better thrust/weight ratio which keeps getting better until it runs dry. They already know from the 12k hop tests about how much fuel is needed for the landing burn but those were from a stall accelerating to terminal velocity. I’d think the ballistic deorbit part is relatively straightforward. The data they still need is just what you mentioned, how it behaves in between. Dialing that in will be for those flights when the tiles need to be secure. They’re still doing that with F9 gathering more performance data with every flight.

Seems a shame since nature took so long to concentrate the materials into ores only to have us disperse it even more thinly than “humanly” possible. One would think the materials themselves have far more inherent value by virtue of being up there. The problem is keeping it there for how long and developing the technology required to make use of it.

That's what the tiles and belly flop is for. Using the atmosphere for braking.

Another awesome CSI Starbase deep dive. This episode discusses and looks inside(literally) the changes from B7 to B9 and includes some incredible video examinations of both ground and flight testing. Must See!

In an attempt to connect with the common folk, NASA (or somebody else in the know) have renamed the “near rectilinear halo orbit”.

And whatever it’s called, CAPSTONE has been flying it for a year now..

V2 won’t be an improvement if that’s your concern.

What did they rename the orbit? I scanned the article and didn't see a new name?

    Yeah, that’s the $64 question…

I’ve asked and will let you know if they respond.
