They seem pretty confident in the equipment based in part on us just getting a request to ship equipment to a Lockheed test facility for Artemis VII mission right before Christmas...it's gonna be a fun decade...

Starship seems like the best option for getting cargo to Mars but is it really better for people than something like Hermes(but with life module added) from the Martian? Seems to me if on orbit refueling is required then a ship that never lifts or lands might be better for moving people between planets.

My reasoning is Earth ascent/descent is radically different from Mars ascent/descent and both have radically different priorities than interplanetary which requires much more space and artificial gravity for months on end. For small initial crews it could work but i don’t see 100 people sharing a starship for months. As a bus to get them to orbit, yes. As a freighter to get massive supplies there, definitely.

Yes and no. The shop can deliver cargo. Do the math comparing Apollo cargo to the moon, and suddenly even 20 refueling ships makes sense. That said, in the end the moon and Mars will both require an entire infrastructure both orbitally and surface. Eventually we will have caravans heading to Mars consisting of several different vessels, but for now starship is the closest to happening and most likely to succeed first.

I just don’t see it as a mass transit people mover unless we develop hibernation. That many for that long is a disaster waiting to happen both in terms of logistics and sanity. On the order of ten to Mars or 50-100 just to the moon, maybe(imagine the line to the head). It would take much larger ships which favors transit only to avoid the complications and requirements of an earth launched rocket. We won’t be sending those large crews anywhere until that infrastructure is ready in any case. I’m just excited to imagine what might be coming along to do it.

I think one thing you are imagining incorrectly is that Elon wants to put 100 people in 1 Starship for 6 months. When it's more like 10 people in 10 Starships, plus all the cargo all those Starships can hold. That way, you add redundancy while reducing the disaster waiting to happen in terms of logistics and sanity.
