We’re still stuck with “one prefab module for this and another for that” which allows all the complex wiring to be done down here but limits the scope and scale of the hab as a whole and lends to the kludgy appearance. That might be the biggest hurdle LIFE modules face in terms of getting fitted out in orbit. We either need a quantum leap in EVA suit mobility or remote robot Waldos. Or an enormous pressurized orbital assembly structure( ORB sized LIFE module with a massive airlock).

Makes sense that Raptor developement would parallel ship development since it allowed the use of less expensive engines which couldn’t be salvaged anyway without slowing the pace of reaching orbit and returning while waiting for a better engine.

I got this replica just in case…. I don’t think it’s going to happen.

My point was that they unveiled it then tried it out. How would they know it would work?

Ehh, once it went on the test stand someone with a telephoto lense would have unveiled it for them.

They don’t seem particularly risk averse and since Macgregor is well monitored a problem wouldn’t stay secret anyway. This is probably a production unit anyway and any “problems” would have hopefully been ironed out with prototypes.

I hadn’t even considered that before my response. I was just looking at it from the perspective of it’s not necessary to have a more finished version which costs more and can’t be recovered. If Raptor II can do the job that currently needs doing I’d look for III’s to start seeing use after they can catch boosters first and then later on Ships when they can get reused. That won’t be too long and they’ll need them in bunches so using up II’s in the meantime makes sense if they have them available.

Nah, even with a telephoto lense, the stand is still obscured by earth and other GSE.

I mean this is the same SpX that transports around engines on pickup trucks in the open, and who's production facility is basically open air public space.

The secret sauce is how they put everything inside the engine skin via 3dp, and unless you're superman with the xray vision, the external images are pretty meaningless.

Seems pretty clear to me. They certainly handle it better than many do with their oil & radiator changes. I wonder where the pumped out water gets sent. I’d guess a treatment facility but it may only need to avoid the surrounding wetlands.
