I mean, everybody knows the front axle nut on these trucks takes a 36 mm socket

Edit before I become part of the problem: Its NOT 36, its 35 mm in case anyone doesnt know

Love Brian Cox. Very articulate and comes across as very down to earth unlike NDT whom IMHO, have found to be an arrogant asshole.

Was starting to insulate my garage today and had a question pop into my head that I have asked myself before, but never put in enough effort to research. I saw this thread later in the day and figured it a good time to ask.

What is the temperature of something (or nothing?) that has been completely insulated from any outside influences? In my simple mind It would just remain the same as when "insulated" but I am far from well informed on the subject. Is it even possible, and if so is this scenario in existence somewhere in the known universe?

According to the laws of physics, heat always dissipates till equilibrium is reached. Even insulation can only do so much, and it will still have minor temperature fluctuations.

So what would the temp be at equilibrium?

It would probably be a combination of environmental factors and what the item being insulated is made of.

Think of insulation as something that just slows down the flow of heat, like a resistor in an electric circuit. Eventually the insulated thing will reach the temperature of whatever is outside it, but it could take a while.

Id guess it would be the temp of outerspace since anything else is just a manipulation of temps by suns, stars etc...

This makes me think I may be asking the wrong question or using the wrong word. Maybe a better question would be, "What is the temperature of something that is completely ISOLATED from any outside influences?"

EDIT I do remember learning about absolute zero a little when I was in high school, the statement "According to the laws of physics, heat always dissipates till equilibrium is reached." makes me think that may be the case?
