those old black and whites remind me of "Twilight zone" episodes....clearly ahead of their time. Still fun to watch though....

    Agreed.

    Probably the root cause.

They are very good at learning from their mistakes.

Of course, in reality, that is what engineering is.

Having to turn a profit to stay in business is a huge motivator for civilian companies. The government doesn’t have to worry about that and the results are obvious.

I think government research has its place when the technology is in early stages of development - very expensive, maybe doesn't have a business model, might not even work. But once the concept is proven, private enterprise is more efficient for continued development.

    Excellent points.

I’ll add that with the changes in an individual’s /corporation’s ability to amass tremendous wealth over the past few decades allows for innovation and risk taking outside government bureaucracy on a similar scale before that was unimaginable. Some of these companies have a bottom line bigger than a small country.

And let’s not discount the targeted subsidies from the Feds to develop these technologies and systems.

Some SpaceX space and science BS since were on the topic. I’ve been making some good use of my Kennedy Space Center annual passes. Took my youngest boy out there on Saturday and found a Dragon capsule tucked away in the corner!
Hoping to see some of the Starlink satellites but think they’re mostly passing over the west coast. here’s a neat tracker

    Enjoy!

saw the videos and it looked pretty serious to me. I can only imagine that the bulk of all the stainless seams and welds got quite a stress with that.
I’m curious the direction they proceed with this. Also makes me wonder what changes they might make to the Starship MK2 that they’re building at Cape Canaveral.
That bulkhead cap got like 12 seconds of air-time!!!

Sounds like they're skipping to Mk3 which uses the newer tank welding technique.
