I went to drop the spare tire on my 2002 Prerunner. I found the two piece rod and the "hole"
I connected the two pieces of the rod and tightened the set screw. When I inserted the rod it did not seem to be guided.....I could swing it left and right. No luck in finding the connection for the rod (starting to sound like porno).
Anyway, when I pulled out the rod only one part came out. The other piece of the rod stayed in the hole.
If I can get the damn thing out, I am going to weld it together. How the hell do I drop the spare without a rod? Besides that, isn't there supposed to be a guide of some kind in the hole?

I could care less about the spare tire on your tacoma. I want to know more about the space tire? Do you work for NASA?

We like to have a little bit of fun on here, sometimes at the expense of others...loosen up a bit and your request for hell might go a little farther.

Not sure of how to fix your issue but... Bump for OP.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
If you crawl under the truck I believe you will find that the tunnel stops short of the tire wenching apparatus. You will likely find then other end of your rod also.

welp that and your user name explains why you can't seemingly operate a simple spare tire mount/mechanism. Lol

So much innuendo, so little time.

For real though I'm having a hard time understanding your situation.

You should be able to crank the mechanism counterclockwise to lower the bracket that holds your spare up against the bottom side of your bed.

    Is your linkage/cable rusted?

On my rods, I drilled the "little" indent a lot deeper so that the screw goes in deeper and then I don't have to worry about it coming apart like it did for you. It is a pain to get it into that grove. No such thing as a guide on mine.

Yelp, but people make allowances because of my condition. You would not believe the crap I can get away with.
I even had two buddies give it a try. They could not connect it to the mechanism either. At this point, I think the previous owner made some kind of modification or broke something. The tire appears to be original.

I will try to access the mechanism without the rod. After an accident, I have a tough time getting up and down but I think the exercise is actually helping me!
