    Dude I had the same problem when I used spacers with my old camper. I took a board of aluminum and screwed it into the inside of the tailgate, creating a lip for the gate to bite on. Works perfectly

    I’d leave it the way it is. It looks perfectly functional. No point in putting money into if it’s not what you want. You start modifying it and it’ll be harder to get rid of when you do find the shell you want.
