Just bought a Toyota tacoma last week thinking about wheels spacers are they safe? Will it make my tires that much wider?

They won't make your tires wider but your stance will get wider depending on how big of a spacer you use. I don't recommend spacers for extreme offroading but for mild 4x4 trails and daily driving they're usually fine. Just check torque at every tire rotation or 5k miles.

Why exactly are you even considering wheel spacers?

Go with bora or spider Trax as they are hub centric. As said above they are safe if checked and rechecked for torque. Can put extra stress on bearings and other components causing replacing sooner but they are safe.
