I have ordered a spare H key for the truck, in case I lose one or both of the originals, and I'll have it programmed here by a certified locksmith. My 2001 didn't have electronic keys for doors or ignition, so I always had a spare key duct-taped up under the frame somewhere. I don't want to duct-tape one of those new-fangled electronic three-button H keys--so what do I do? At Ace Hardware I just got a $3 plain metal copy of the H key (they called it a 'valet key'), just to open the tailgate and the door. Next I'll hide the spare three-button electronic one somewhere in the cab (won't say where). Now I'll duct tape the plain metal key up under the frame (won't say where), and that'll get me into the cab where the spare electronic one is. Three bucks.

Dont use duct tape, use wire or a zip tie.

Take the battery out of the smart key so that it doesn't allow the doors to unlock. Then use it directly against the push button start to get it to go.

It's a work in progress. See my build thread.
I don't think the H key is that smart.

My SR5 has no push-button start; it starts with the electronic H key, but not with the plain metal key. The plain metal key just gets me in the door to grab the extra electronic one. Duct tape worked fine for 15 years on my old truck. I'll add a zip tie to keep it stronger.

Have done the same thing. Dealer wanted $27 bucks for a plain jane key. Home depot cut me one for $2.75. No electronics in key so really tough to damage. Will always open the tailgate and cab doors just won't start truck. I've Hidden key it in exterior of truck and my spare Electronic H key is hidden inside the cab. 1 - I have a bad habit of locking myself out of the truck with the keys inside cab. 2 - When out Hiking/ Hunting with a partner and they get back to truck before me (or I don't make it back). They only need to know where spares are to get into truck out of weather, warm up and listen to tunes while waiting for me to get back.

My dealer made me a "Plain Jane" key for nothing. It's in a mag box on the frame. locked my keys in once in the last 30 years, but when you need it, you need it.

I snagged 2 OEM keys off ebay for about $9 each to make tailgate/glove box spares. I know you can get generic ones at lowes or home depot but if your anal like me and want the oem rubber logo they're available on ebay and i think Amazon as well.

Got a link to them you can post? I had a dealer cut me one and I wished I would of looked at it before he cut it. Inch & a quarter by inch & a quarter square part that goes on your key ring. I got it cut so I can leave the truck running while I make quick business stops in town.

Seller i got from ebay doesn't have any more listed, looks like Amazon has it cheapest at the moment for $11.18. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00FZPG...UTF8&colid=1DLNX8Q0Z2L8F&coliid=IT8EHJ282RLMM Just to be clear this is non transponder key for tailgate and glovebox.

Spare keys are only useful for SR/SR5 owners. TRD/LTD models wont let you lock the truck with the fob in the truck unless you lock the doors using the button on the inside door then close your door (which is a stupid way to lock your truck).

Spare tailgate/glove box key can be handy though since they only give you one.

Glove box key is the key inside the fob.

TRD Sport and Off road, the extra key is only for the tailgate. If you keep it in your glove box you will only ever need 1.

Ah the salesguy told me the single key did both, but I've never bothered trying to lock the glovebox yet.

Yeah the spare key they give is only for the gate. Glove box is locked by the laser cut key inside the fob. Reason for this is you can lock your valuables in the glove box, take the key out of the fob and give just the fob to the valet or the service dept. I just did this the last time I went in for service.

On the 2017 however, the key inside the fob will unlock the gate as well as the box.

Got my spare three-button key from ReplaceMyRemote.com, who said my key (FCC: HYQ12BDP) is actually for a Scion (!), not a '16 Tacoma SR5. Oh, well. It was uncut and unprogrammed for a hundred bucks. I took it to my local Toyota dealership, who cut and programmed it for free! Cool! I've been their loyal customer for 15 years, so that might have had something to do with it.

You can't even do that, at least as far as I know. It detects it's in there and won't lock the door. I have to lock the door with the physical key to lock the key fob inside, otherwise the door ain't locking.

Yeah, the SR5 locks just fine with a 3-button smart hidden inside. Then, if I lose one, I use the duct-taped basic metal key to get in the door. Glad I didn't pay the extra $$ for the TRD.
