I have a new 2021 Tacoma with the base SR trim. (Yeah, I know I'm cheap, or frugal if you want to be polite.) I purchased the extra cost option SR Convenience Package that includes two Keyless Remote Fobs for locking and unlocking the doors and alarm.

I stopped at a local locksmith (much closer than the nearest Toyota dealer) and had an extra key made. Just the key function, no remote feature. $4.00.

Like my old '06 Tacoma, I like to keep a simple key in the back truck bed compartment if I do something dumb like lock the keys inside.

It works fine for inserting in the driver’s door key slot for locking and unlocking. It even turns the ignition on with all the dash lights and even turns the starter motor but the engine doesn’t start.

Is that typical for a non-Toyota dealer made extra key? Or is that what's supposed to happen? Or?

Many thanks for your thoughts please.

You need a chipped programmable key made to start the truck.

The immobilizer light will flash unless one is detected.

Key transponder is missing. So immobilizer is working as it should. You need a factory key w its transponder progrmed to your truck

Ah, so the transponder is missing and it's working like it should. Thanks gents, much appreciated.

I guess I can still use that key to unlock the doors tho. That's a good thing. In case I lock the real keys inside.
