I had the joy today of losing my main set of keys this morning with my backups locked in the truck. I used AAA to get in but that took a long time.
I know the keys have a smart chip in them and are big $. If I have a basic non chip key made is that something that can come from most places or still need to come from a Toyota dealer?
While we are at it anybody have some links to a good way/product for hiding a key?

You can have a key made to open the doors ($10 at the dealership), but it won’t work in the ignition. Keep a spare in your wallet!

yikes that sounds terrible to have to sit on, lol. Unless it's one of those fancy credit card style keys.

Thanks about the cost of the key. $10 isn't to bad. I was expecting ALOT more than that.
There is no way it's getting kept in my wallet though. ..

If you have a rear slider and about 30 seconds, you can get in for the cost of a fairly stiff piece of wire. 30 seconds if you don't know what you are doing. It is crazy easy to get in that way.

Yeah they still make regular keys. Walmart only charges $40 for a chipped key as well

Walmart, Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc. anywhere can cut you a regular non chip key. Keep your receipt and go out and double check it works on your door though. I had one made at Lowe’s and they didn’t cut it quite right.

Why would keeping the emergency key in the truck be a good idea, ever?

+1 on the Walmart. I actually went there after I had paid $80 at a key shop for one. Sigh. You do have to pay $10 for the key itself, but $50 total isnt bad.
Also, Bed Bath and Beyond in Charlotte area has a machine that cuts them from 2005-2015 Tacos.

The bigger question is where do folks get a deal to have their keyless smart fobs made, eg 2016 and newer. Those can run $500.

I don't do it on the Tacoma because of the expensive chipped keys but on previous vehicles I used to tape a spare key somewhere onto the wiring harness. Even if you were looking at it, it just looked like another place on the harness with electrician's tape.

My dad has a 2011 Toyota Tacoma. He no longer uses the remotes that came with it as he got a AutoStart system that came with new remotes. Am I able to reprogram or get them reprogrammed so I don't have to buy a new remote?

I keep my spare key/"offroad key" in the truck. My truck is always locked with the alarm activated; if someone broke into it without deactivating the alarm, they wouldn't be able to drive away even with the spare key....the alarm disengages the starter. Spare key doesn't have the ability to deactivate the alarm. My spare one of those is kept in the house.
