Yeah. I could see that. Luckily I only had to pull my rig about 2 feet with my Hi-lift.

I misread that at first and was stunned that someone destroyed an oil filter on a 2nd gen. After I reread it and realized it was destroyed by the battery everything made more sense. I'll bet that made a mess under the hood. Did it puncture the oil filter?

After last trip (banged up driveshaft) I may be picking up a spare for wheelin' trips. About $275 from a junk yard tho. Still haven't found a spare junk yard CV axle either. I may buy one from Partsource.. a shurtrac cv axle with lifetime warranty for $99. Plus i'd like to grab a spare ujoint and outer tierod. Good to have spare parts, just in case. Sometimes I get a little aggressive.... ;)

A rock putting a hole in your oil pan has the same effect--ending your trip on the spot.

Surprised nobody's mentioned the most vulnerable part.

    Ready?

    Spare tire.

1st upgrade your tires to a tough off road LT tire.

2nd - upgrade your spare to the same thing (a size smaller if you need to in order to make it fit)

3rd - carry tire repair plugs, valvestems. A compressor and ratchet tiestrap can be useful if you break a bead and need to reseat it.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
I dont carry anything for the tacoma, other than spare tires and tools.

the 81 i carry and extra filter, extra key, tires, jugs of water, jumper cables, tools, duct tape, zip ties and a handful of bolts. When it breaks i usualy bandaid it and keep wheeling. If it breaks too bad then i winch it on to the trailer and come back another day

I second the extra socks and shoes or boots, as well as a blanket and pillow and a few flashlights.

It's not like owning a Jeep... the Toyota just keeps on keepin' on! Never a break down, never a stuck I needed to be pulled from. 3 Tacomas now, about 300,000 miles in all... Baja California, Mexico and Anza-Borrego Desert/ Ocotillo Wells, CA is where I do most of my four wheeling.

In my compartments I have a small tool set, jumper cable, and tow strap (to pull non-Toyotas or 2WDs), wire, duct tape, cinch ties, etc.

If I am the only vehicle, I carry my boat deep cycle battery with me.
If only vehicle, I leave it idle most of the time vs turn it off. Hard off roading can shake internal stuff off battery and partially short it out.
Still runs, but may not have enough current capacity to start it.

no doubt, i use donor battery's in my 81 and i have toasted 3 in the last year.

the one was a great battery and my alt decided it wanted to charge at 18v for who knows how long.

I usually take a spare on the trailer, but i dont have a spare at the moment, so the other truck serves as a spare
