    I'm NOT a hard-core-off-roader but I have visions of a bump and a
    drop and a snag of this chain on to something where the end result
    won't be pretty.

    Go get a small camping carabiner. The kind that are not designed for climbing. they are cheap and you can use them to loop the chain back up. And since they are cheap aluminum, they dont rust or corrode, and if they do hitting it with the tire iron will just break it off.
