Anyone know how to remove this lock. Came with my truck and I would prefer not to have to mess with it out on the road.
I keep my truck in my garage and don't go into areas with tweekers.

Sorry to bump an old thread, I attempted to install this lock today on a 2017 but can't get it to stay in. I pushed it in to the existing receiver as far as I could get it to go, tried to remove it by hand and was unsuccessful so thought it was good. After I crank back up the spare and remove the tool, the lock falls right out. This happened twice, the second time I taped it with a rubber mallet a few times. Can someone verify I have the right part, I am unsure how it actually locks in to the "socket" already there. Attached a picture of the receiving part on the truck and the part I have.

You have the right part. Check post #10 for usage of the key. My post is #18 with the instructions.

Mine (black lock part) initially did not want to stay on. I needed a socket and a mallet to secure the lock to the stem. Took a few good whacks until it finally seated.

I took pix at the time, let me know if you need them.

Excellent description. I've never heard of one nor seen one, but I understood exactly what you were saying. :hattip:

It's a gizmo I don't need, as I just have a lowly 5 lug, but it does appear to be an effective deterrent.

Certainly more effective than the cousin product used on wheels!

Excellent idea! I bought this one, it has extra pins so I can build the rectangle shape to match the opening, prevent wiggle.

Someone actually did steal my spare by defeating this system somehow. I found the spare missing, along with the crank insert with the female keyed surface (circled structure in the photo). I found the insert on the ground not far from the truck. I'm not sure how this was done but I figure they must have used some sort of tool to reach the insert and pop it off of the crank. Without the insert in place, the crank can be turned with any tool that can reach it. I came up with a simple solution to prevent such an attack in the future, and to prevent accidental dislogement of the insert (which has also happened to me). Drill a hole on either side of the metal housing and put a machine screw through, securing the insert in place. The insert has a tube going through its core that you can pass the screw through (see diagram). It is just under 4mm in diameter. Use a screw of size #6 or smaller, and length 2.5-3". Make sure you thread-lock it, because if it works loose it could migrate out so that it hits surrounding structures and blocks its own rotation.

Additional security. If you are using a steel wheel for a spare you can add a padlock to the retainer bracket on the inside of the spare, the bracket has a padlock flange which protrudes up thru the lug nut hole:

I replaced my wheel with a TRD Pro wheel which is thicker so used a Trimax spare cable lock and wheel spacer instead:

    Lock?

Lol. There's no such thing. If I decide to take it, nothing anyone can do can prevent it. Not behind a lock, not in a safe, not in an underground steel vault.

I'm honest to a fault though. Others, not so much.

A lock is more an insurance clause gimmick than any kind of deterrent.

Never forget this and your disappointments will be fewer.

Almost 30 years on the road and I've never had a spare stolen, guess I'll save $40 bucks and keep living on the edge..

Getting the key aligned into that thing is going to be real fun in the dark. Glad my truck does not have it, it's hard enough with just the slot. My spare is on a cheap steelie rim, not really worth protecting and I have insurance anyhow.

    X2

Add the corrosion that's inevitable part of the job, and stealing spares is some blue collar work..

Apologies for the gravedig, but what did you loop the other end of the Trimax lock around? You mention the spacer but it’s not clear to me how that relates. Thanks!

You shove it in, juggle it until it fits and then screw it just hard enough.
