That hook turns the spare tire hoist

I did a small write up on this when I put a JDM motor in a customers truck. Search in this forum posted by Member Glamisman Under topic JDM , it is post #23.

Unfortunately that hook doesn’t work for mine. Wes’s some type of fitting. Like a lug nut lock fitting.

it looks like the OP has an aftermarket antitheft device on his spare tire carrier. (What key it takes I have no idea).

I stand corrected it's an OEM spare tire lock, I learn something new everyday from this site.

If you don’t care about having the security or don’t want to spend the money you can pry that thing off with a screwdriver and hammer, then just use the hook.

I did this after a tire shop lost my key.

I am ready to remove the lock as I can’t find a key that fits. Is there a way to remove it with the tire still on? Or a way to lower the tire without the key? Super crazy.

It’s been awhile but I seem to recall working a long pry bar or screwdriver in there. Got it on the edge of the key, couple smacks and it popped off.

Was hard to work around the spare but I know I did it because I, too couldn’t drop my spare and needed it down to change my rear suspension over.[/QUOTE]

    ^this

they are pressed on as a "dealer" option (mine was) but were not standard from the factory. you can pry bar them off. just be mindful not to overdo it otherwise you can bend the cable box. try putting something on the other side of it if possible

when they replaced my spare tire cable holder under TSB they didn't swap over the lock portion. just use the hook.

Are spare tire thefts common? Mine's been hanging in my truck for close to 30 years as bait, but no takers.

Tried to pry the lock off. No luck. Finally went to a dealer that had a sample set on hand of about sixteen different patterns in a metal box and found the ‘one’ that matched. $80 to order a new one. It also took a parts guy that knew what he was doing. This was the second dealer I tried…. So call ahead to make sure they have the box.

I believe the Card that came with mine said 'McGard" or something like that. It had the # for the part to order a replacement
