I run 265/70/r17 on my Tacoma but my spare tire is 265/65/r17. Question is could I still use that spare in case of a flat?

    Thanks

I do not think you’ll have any problems.
Just get the same size back on as soon as you can.

There’s a slight chance you’ll get and ABS light come on, since one tire will be rotating faster than the other. But that isn’t a huge deal.

shouldn't be to big an issue, but if you need 4 wheel drive you can't use it with that spare. It will cause binding and damage. Get the correct size tire asap.

    Of course.

If you have a long road trip prior to being able to get the flat repaired or replaced, some would suggest mounting the spare up front (assuming you're not long tripping in 4wd) to make the rear axle happier.

Those are so close in size that the 265/70/17's on your truck will be the same diameter as your spare after you've driven the truck 30,000 miles. Even if you started out with the same size spare, it will end up being about one size larger than the ones on the ground after they've been driven 30,000 miles. Unless you do a 5 way rotation.

All 4 tires should be the same size, same type, and with the same number of miles on them if you plan to operate in 4X4. That way they are the same diameter. But if conditions are bad enough that you need 4X4 it wouldn't hurt to use it for a short distance. Especially when they are that close in size.

This is only realistically an issue when guys are running 35" tires on the ground with a 30" spare.

OP you are good, I had to use my stock size spare with the other 3 tires of the same size as yours on a road trip home, left it on the rear for the drive home ~200 mi, and then swapped to the front for reasons mentioned. You could DEFINITELY feel biding immediately in 4x4 (in a straight line on paved surface) but couldnt notice it at all just normal street driving in the front or the rear in 2hi.

If you needed 4x4 with running the smaller spare you are already on a surface that necessitates it due to lack of traction so the size difference wont matter anyways.

    Can you use it? Yes...

Should you do it for a prolonged period? NO.

    Is it ideal? No.

Can it damage your diff gears by causing premature wear? Yes.

Should you use tires with different diameter/circumference in 4x4? Not a good idea.

Should you start shopping for a correctly sized spare tire to match the rest? Yes.
