A 14mm deep socket fits over it. That way instead of hand cranking it, you just run it up with an impact.

14mm isn't compatible with my version. Did some research and there are 2 styles. One accepts the round hook to turn and can also take a 3/8 extension. Newer version has a special hex head. Custom order supposedly.

One of the first things I did after getting my '09 so I could get at it without dropping the tire.

BTW/FWIW the OEM spare on my '09 has no TPMS sensor...
scuff marks are from having it mounted "air valve up", for 135k original owner miles--they look worse than they are, no significant sidewall damage

This pic is the type I have on my Tacoma. What adapter do you use? Mine did not come with a tool kit.

Call Toyota and they can get you squared away. I got really lucky and found the replacement tag and serial number on a paper in my glove box. It cost me about $30 for the "key" Good luck!

Speaking of Murphy's law.....Someone had mentioned that the knobs on the sides of each section of tool where they fit together could wear out, thus needing another tool or way to lower spare. That is exactly what happened to mine. The hook end section came apart from the other pieces and is now sitting in the wheel of my spare (a lot of good it does me there huh?). Now I have got to figure out a way to go fish the hook section out of the spare.....And the deep socket thing sounds pliable but he never DID tell us the size of the socket he used. Or if anyone else has any ideas on how to fish that hook out of the spare tire wheel well.....:mad:

I'm gonna have to go investigate this. I was thinking how to do this just this morning.

It’s quite excellent. To clarify the 14mm fits over the long skinny pole, not to the jack itself. In case that wasn’t obvious.

I welded the factory hook for the jack to a 1/2" square drive and spin it with my cordless drill. Effortlessly raises or lowers the spare in less than a minute.

I have a 2018 Tacoma with spare tire “lock”.

I lost the tools (interconnecting rods and special key) to lower my spare tire and work with jack.

The special key connects to the hook on end of the rod.

I found that the following places have a decent price on the tools.

    $30.92

    Dorman 926-782 Spare Tire And Jack Tool Kit - Walmart.com - Walmart.com

    $38.99

Dorman OE Solutions Jack Tool Kit 926782 | O'Reilly Auto Parts

    $21.57

Dorman® 926-782 - Spare Tire and Jack Tool Kit (carid.com)

Anyone know a source for a good deal on the special key?
