Trying to fit a larger spare tire into the under bed area. The tire is not clearing the 2 teeth that stick down on the diff side of the tire. Thinking of using a single jack and beating them till the tire clears. Is this going to be an issue? I don’t think so but would like some other opinions.

    thanks in advance.

also I searched and most the threads I found didn’t have this info, turned into arguments about 4 vs 5 tire rotations.

Some fellas beat those tabs flat with a club hammer. Just gotta make sure the tire is not sitting against the exhaust.

I my opinion, the first thing to do, prior to bending the tabs, is to relocate the tire hoist and see if that’s enough. It’s super easy. You basically drill two holes and you are done. I’ll see if I can find a link to share.

What size tire? I easily store my 255/85R16 (33") tire in the stock spare location.

Only thing I did was cut the exhaust just after it drops behind the axle. Was going to do this anyways to avoid getting the tip smashed between a rock and the body.

285/70/17. It gets stuck on the teeth. tried pulling the tire back towards the bed as it was hoisted up and still hits the teeth. If I could bend them out by an inch the tire would fit.

no, it clears the exhaust by about half an inch. However because of the teeth it sits at an angle.

looks like he just adjusted it to the other holes, or did he drill those holes?

the two things that hang down near the diff that the tire fits into to prevent it from sliding forward.

You just shift it one set of holes and drill two new ones. There are only 4 holes to begin with.

maybe you still gotta bend the teeth, but at least the tire hoists up straight without having to pull on it. I run a 32” spare and did this mod. Was no problem.

Ahh, yeah just whack em with a rubber mallet and be done with it.

Surprised your 285s aren't fitting up there proper. My 255s are a true 33", where your 285 is closer to 32.8". My exhaust was the only thing in my way, so it whacked.

I think every truck may be different as far as exact placement of things down there. Probably gonna do the mallet or the relocation of the chain. Or both.

I also cut my exhaust to avoid smashing it, like you mentioned. I'm about to get the lift and tires installed. Any issues with the exhaust burning the spare tire? This is my clearance now with a stock spare. Did you cut further back than I did?
