About to do a spark plug change on my wife's 11 Prius at 166k and was wondering if I should also do them on the 13 Tacoma with 67k we just bought.
I've seen recommended intervals of 30k to 100k to 10 years. Do people really change plugs at 30k?
Going to get plugs at the dealer unless anyone can recommend a reputable online source, which I'd prefer because my dealer charges double from other sources I've seen online.

Yes, Id do them if you dont know the history. These trucks are hard on plugs, but its an easy job to do.

You can search the reputable online dealers like McGeorge to avoid a lot of the markup.

With the V6 4.0, it's a great debate. Some do, some stretch it out, and some wait until the vehicle starts missing and wonder why. Some stick with stock and some will use iridium. Some claim to have issues with anything other than stock plugs.
Here's what NGK states will work in a V6, 4.0. The stock NGK plug is at the bottom. Denso has something similar on their website.

On my 2006 and now my 2014, I stuck to the recommended 30k changes and always OEM. And I buy from the dealer or Denso directly. Not Amazon, too many stories of Asian fakes.

The Irridium plugs last 100k ish, copper plugs about 30k. So, that's why there's always a flip flop on how long and what interval to use. Even with iridium, 65kish is fine. I have a set to do mine, should have done in the spring but I didn't - will be doing in fall, probably around 70-75, then every 50 on irridium. They're pretty cheap, just more of a hassle on the truck because of the driver side bank.

Edit - Don't worry about indexing, this ain't a drag car.

    Do you have a 4.0 or a 2.7?

What does your owners manual say on the topic?

Just changed mine out (again) after another 30K on the clock on my 4.0, 5 speed auto. I purchased the plugs from RockAuto

    The 4.0 wasn’t available with a 5MT.
    OP profile says 5MT, so I’m going to say it’s a 2.7:thumbsup:

FWIW, I think the manual says 120k is when you need to replace them.
I’d try to get it done by 100k. Doing them earlier won’t hurt anything.

    This. Updated profile for clarity.

Manual says 30k, just was surprised to hear that. Carfax showed the vehicle serviced every 5k at the dealer and plugs not shown done, but everything else from air filter to injection system, brakes, power steering etc flushed at 30k shown.

    Are you sure?
The manual says 30k for the 4.0.
But I don’t see it listed at 30k for the 2.7.

    Very good call!

I was going off the Haynes manual recommendation, which says 30k. Couldnt find the plug replacement interval in the owners manual at all, but now looking through the supplemental manual it says only use iridium plugs on the 4 cylinder and change at 192000km (Canadian Manual) or 144 months. So, safe to say iridium plugs were installed from the factory and I've got 2 years before I need to. Might just do them when I do the Prius though, which is definitely overdue.

This has been helpful, thanks all

No problem. You can’t really do them too soon.
It’s your call whether you use anti-seize or torque them to spec.
    That’s a great debate.

Torque values change with antiseize in place.

On my aluminum head Miata I used anti seize, started the plug with a rubber hose (you can't make it crooked or too tight that way) and finished it gently by hand until I felt the crush washer crush, then about another 1/4 turn or so and it was snug.

Never had one blow out, never had one seized.

    Because anti-seize changes torque values.
And torquing them to spec with anti-seize would cause you to over torque them.

    FWIW, I do use anti-seize and I don’t don’t torque to spec.
I have nothing against not using it and torquing to spec.
In fact, I probably won’t use any anti-seize and torque to spec the next time I do mine in my truck.

Why? Because most plug manufacturers say not to use anti-seize and torque to spec.
Plus, I actually have a torque wrench that goes down that low now.
So might as well do it “right”.

Very good. I have a torque wrench that'll go low so I'll just do that.
