looking at a used pair of SPC arms. Not many miles and in great shape. However I am. Not sure what Gen they are and I read the thread on this site about all the issues that had to be addressed on the first Gen’s. So my question is how do I tell if these have been upgraded or if they have the faulty stuff on them. They do have a Zerk for greasing the ball joint.

I could be mistaken but I don't think the earlier SPCs had the zerk fitting on top.

Those look like the newest generation to me, with the forged arms

Definitely not latest...thats a casting welded to tubing. Ball joint is the latest type though.

that would be one generation from the latest. They come with the latest ball joint with zerk fittings, but still have the older specride bushings, and are still the tubular design.

    They look good though!

I thought the tubular design had round arms on both sides? I'll have to go out and look at mine again...then again mine are 2 years old so maybe they're an earlier generation

Mevotech sells rebranded SPCs for less than half the price.

Thanks! I'm in the market for some this year when I redo my front suspension. The rear gobbled up thousands.

Interesting....I could have sworn mine were tubed on both sides but theyve been caked in dirt for so long I couldn't say for sure. Now I need to go see just to know with my own eyes lol

I don't know anyone personally that's run the Mevotech brand ones but the few guys on TW that have them have said they're virtually identical (to the previous gen SPCs not the new fully forged ones)

Still a really good deal though

Lots of dollars and no sense...
So if I have the first gens without the zerk fitting I can retrofit with a zerk fitting?

All you gotta do is swap the ball joints and you’ll have a zerk fitting.

There have been at least 3 major generations of SPC arms.

1st gen, half forged half tubed, non greaseable ball joint, BONDED RUBBER BUSHINGS
2nd gen, half forged half tubed, non greaseable ball joint, SPEC RIDE FULL FLOATING BUSHINGS (to solve the "issue" of people installing the bonded bushings wrong - not at ride height)
2.5 gen, same as 2nd gen, but with the zerk greaseable ball joint
3rd gen, the latest, fully forged, zerk greaseable ball joint, with x-axis joints at the frame.

You can definitely get the zerk greaseable ball joints and put them on any generation of SPC arm. DO NOTE: there is a part number for tacomas, and one for 4 runners as the taper on the ball joint shaft is slightly different.

You cal also upgrade the 2.X gen spc (and maybe even the 1st gen) to the xaxis joints at the frame. But those joints are like 200+ bucks.

I am getting ready to do a full refresh of front suspension and I might take the time to pull my 2nd gen UCA off and replace the specride bushings with a more standard split type of bushing and drill n tap the UCA for zerks at those joints on the frame. I THINK if my research is good, that energy suspension has some split bushings that would fit the bill just right.
