Hey Folks, new (to me) 2008 Regular Cab in my yard and I absolutely love the thing! I'm having some trouble with the speakers though, and I'm looking into changing out the HU and adding some components in the doors. I can get a decent deal from a friend on a set of Alpine SPS-610C 6-3/4" components: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500SPS610C/Alpine-SPS-610C.html

If you notice though, Crutchfield says they won't fit in the doors as the speaker mounting height is 0.686" vs the taco's 0.277" In a few places around the interwebs, people have mentioned that it's possible to make some mods for taller speakers to fit. From what I can tell, the cuts that people are referring to would be trimming down the plastic lip on the backside of the speaker grille using a dremel.

Does anyone out there know if this is the case? I can't really find a definitive answer/guide anywhere and don't want to shell out money for speakers and new mounting brackets if they won't be able to fit. Any guesses as to what the max mounting height would be with the grilles trimmed down?

    Thanks!

You will probably have to fashion your own trim rings. Mine are for 5 1/4" speakers, though, and they fit comfortably in the door.

Thanks for the photos Rob! I guess what I'm wondering, is if I go with speakers that are a little taller than those, is it possible to trim some of the plastic off the backside of the door panel speaker grille to make them fit?

I'm pretty sure that you could probably use a Dremel and trim out whatever space you need. I don't think you'll have to do much, if any.

Crutchfield is going to say anything that doesn't fit as a direct bolt in won't fit (i.e. every screw hole lines up with factory one's). Even if it's as simple as putting a trim ring under the speaker.

Those will fit without issue. I'm quite familiar with the interior parts of the doors as I've installed multiple sets. You won't have an issue with depth or diameter. That's as about as straight forward an install as any. Just get a proper adapter cut and make sure the mounting diameter of the hole is right for your speaker.
