Doesn't matter if the vehicle was purchased new or used, it has a 3/36k mile warranty. The powertrain is 6years/ 60k miles

Did anyone ever come to a resolution. Of the speaker not working . I have now had 3 passenger side rear speakers fail. We now know that right near the voice coil has melted ( see pic) the dealer at this point has no idea. Unfortunately this occurred right around the end of warranty and they say they wont cover it yet. We have completely swapped the head unit with another truck and my head unit worked in the other truck. The head unit seemed to work while the speaker was out, but now the head unit is sometimes on , then not, then some sound makes it to all speakers but crackles like a poor radio station. Any help out there is appreciated. So far Toyota is not covering this under warranty as i did not create a work order until a few months after the fact as i was not able to get there. HELP!

How loud are you playing your speakers? the voice coil creates heat as you turn up the volume. Too much heat will melt the plastic baskets causing the magnet to shift shorting out the voice coil on the speaker.

Your best bet is to get some better aftermarket speakers as they use large magnets that can dissipate heat pretty easy. Or turn down the volume.

So, no I dont play it loud often as i have had concussion issues and the volume doesn’t help. For sure the magnets have shifted. You can feel the resistance moving the speaker by hand. So if its not loud and therefore not much signal to the speaker, why is it over heating. I think i may measure the ohms to the speaker and see what it reads. An more suggestions are appreciated.

You say the radio has been replaced and it still does this right?

So we can eliminate a radio issue

You dont play it loud, so we can remove that from being a issue also

My guess is that there is a short to ground somewhere. Unplug the radio, unplug the speaker and take a multimeter and measure each of the speaker leads to ground (use the window regulator or check strap bolt for ground) try moving the harness loom (rubber tube between door and body) to see if there is any change.

If you dont find any shorts, next check the harness for resistance. put one end of the multimeter in the radio harness and the other end in the speaker plug. resistance should be either zero or very very low.

Excellent advice. I will try that. One concern..... with the speaker removed the radio was fine when i left the dealer. But one hour later when i started the truck again the radio did not work., then...... five minutes later it started get sounds to the speakers, but crackling..... pretty confusing.

That does sound very much like a short.

The OP said the truck was originally purchased in Oct 2015. So the truck is now 4 years and 2 months old.

New person chimed in with a speaker issue, so we are not talking about the OP anymore.

Not sure how of settings on multimeter to check wires to ground? Do i have to remove all radio harnesses? I have measure Zero resistance though across the speaker wires , door to back of radio harness.

To check for short to ground, put one lead on the speaker wire and another wire on a chassis ground. Im not sure where my multimeter is, but there is a setting that just checks for continuity, generally it will beep if detects that.

The wires have continuity. It seems that as the Truck gets warm the radio is more likely to start get a signal to the speakers. But why have 3 rear speakers melted and quit. How is that temporarily there is to much power to the speaker.
