I want to upgrade the head unit in my 2017 Tacoma, to the newer entune 3.0. From what I've seen its a very easy upgrade. I also wanted to upgrade my speakers, and because i can get a JBL compatible entune 3.0 head unit, I was thinking about using the OEM JBL speakers that come in the "premium" package. Has anyone ever done this? Any suggestions on non OEM speakers?

I have used these JBL's in my 2nd gen and 3rd gen and they are a great upgrade for decent price. I highly suggest adding an amp to if you can

I wouldn't bother with replacing the speakers without adding more power.

@Mallcrawler20 is spot on. I wouldn’t bother with any Entune head unit, even it was given to me for free. You will get exponentially better sound from aftermarket HU and speakers. And you don’t have to spend a fortune to get good sound. There are options for every budget. Crutchfield is a good starting point.

Regardless of the “hardware” you choose, I highly recommend putting money aside for sound dampening, at least in the doors as a bare minimum. Many people underestimate/ignore the importance of sound dampening. Not only does it reduce transmission of noise from the exterior into the cabin, but it also eliminates holes/gaps in the door panel that would otherwise reduce speaker efficiency.

the jbl is an all-encompassing solution that requires the radio, jbl factory amp(it digitally talks to the radio, adapters to interface with this signal to use either part separately are $400+), and dedicated wiring ran from the amp to each individual speaker-- the amp has a specialty eq and processing that makes each different type of speaker gets a specific signal. it's an entirely different setup. but most that have it don't consider it an upgrade.

your truck as it's wired now, has 4 pairs of speaker wires behind the dash that connect to 6 speaker locations. 2 rear door speakers, and the dash speakers have a total of 4 wires going to them, the connector serves as the junction point to tie the front door speakers into the audio signal the dash speakers receive.
