I'm new to this group, just today. I AM a Tacoma guy, but I have a question that relates to my Triumph TR6 that I put a Toyota W58 transmission into a few years ago. It works great, but the speedometer reads too low. Not a surprise. I may have to go with a ratio adapter to get an accurate reading, but before doing that I thought I would try to swap in a different driven gear than the 11:31 in there now. I found the needed 28-tooth gear that was used in a number of Tacomas (part no. 33403-39585) but I couldn't determine if it would really mesh well enough to work or even fit the assembly. Here is the embarrassing part. I ordered it anyway but found the the gear shaft to be substantially shorter than the old gear. I sent it back for a refund and reported my failure to a Triumph forum. Then someone there asked me if I could press the gear off of the shaft and onto the longer shaft from the old gear. I hadn't thought of that, but now someone else on that forum wants to give it a try and wants to know the diameter of the shaft. I never measured it. Now I'm thinking I should try to provide the info, and if that other person has success I will give it another try. So, I need to know three things:

    1) Does the idea of pressing a gear off one shaft and onto another have a chance of working?

    2) Is it likely that the 28-tooth driven gear would mesh with the 11-tooth drive gear well enough to work?

    3) Does anyone know the diameter of the shaft for part no. 33403-39585 or where I could find that value? I don't see it in any online parts listings.

    Thanks,
    Tim

The 11-tooth drive gear you have will only mesh with 31-33 tooth driven gears.

If you want to run 28 and 11 with a speedometer cable, use 33403-39495 (N=28) and 33481-14020 (N=11, will mesh with 28-30 tooth driven gears).

Thanks Jeff. I just relayed your response to the Triumph forum. I probably will order the gears myself before too long. I really do appreciate your help.
