    EDITED - :D
    Heya,
    2005 TRD offroad DCSB Auto.

So I am getting P0500 which is speed sensor fault... it comes and goes... I have a scan gauge running into OBD2. Truck is American (I live in canada) and 33s so its good to run the KPH screen on it for speed.

The speedometer works all the time no issue, but the scan gauge will drop signal for the speed reading and kick on the code.

I have yet to find a definitive answer as to what signal provides what for the readout...

As I assume/ understand, Wheel speed sensors only apply to signal for the ABS and there is a Separate speed sensor on the transmission that provides the speedometer readout. The speedometer never sways or varies, only the scan gauge.

What is it that is providing the communication to trip the P0500 and cut out my scan gauge?

I'm going to crawl under and look for the tranny pickup and check the wires... just weird that it comes and goes...

    Update
My OBD reader shows all 4 wheels providing the correct signal.
I've swapped all 4 front to back - though as mentioned below, did not thoroughly clean, just blew out with comp air.
I have GOOGLE searched the issue, which has lead me to posting here...:poking:

    TIA.

A thanks but I’ve watched those would have been more than sufficient. A response like that - good luck on your own.

Sorry to have struck a nerve with some sensitive people. Also sorry I didn't include a definitive blanket statement to conclude that I had searched the depths of the internet to find the source and any info on my own. I have watched those videos... those who also have would have known that the first one provides insight, but no answer and the second one only applies to manual transmissions, the 3rd doesn't apply to tacomas and the parts on the far right are just speed sensors for sale. also this forum doesnt have the information that im looking for which has lead me to create this post...

Kind of disheartening that you have more to say about your wrongful opinion regarding my attitude than you do towards proactively contributing towards appropriate information toward the issue im having.

From what I understand from talking to a toyota tech, watching the vids and any weak info ive found online including this forum, there is an intermittent in the canbus communication between the "combination meter" and the ecu.

Please, only if you have a valid contribution to helping locate the issue on this, or have a link to wiring schematics and such, please comment, no more peanut gallery time wasting posts, TIA

Someone tried to help and you gave a rude response. That's why people responded like that.
We are more than willing to help, if we have the answer, but let us know ahead of time what you have done so far.

    Good luck with the issue.

guy bashes the "weak" info on this forum and then asks for valid contributions only

Umm.. have you contributed anything of value lately?

If you want iron-clad answers with value, go pay a professional mechanic for his time. If you want free answers from truck forum members, lose the attitude

The arrogance and condescension is truly amazing.
Sensitive people... Seriously? Seems the only one butt hurt is you.
Is this your normal tone for everybody? I honestly can't see many people putting up with it?
Last thing then I'll step of my soapbox... This place is full of ball busters. For all the ballbusting that goes on in these threats, there is also a lot of camaraderie between these members. They, we, I, don't take well to being talked down to, as you have noticed.
There is soooooo much knowledge in these threads, it's scary.
To paraphrase Sergeant Hulka from the movie stripes: calm down Francis.

Perhaps "weak" was a poor choice of word that was taken too seriously? perhaps I should have said something like, "Most of the information ive found online was insufficient to what I was hoping to find and the info that was available on the forum didn't solidify the answers I was hoping for..."

Im not sure what else to say, I guess thanks to the guy for taking the time to screenshot something and post it but not actually say anything about watching the videos and having a valid contribution to the conversation or issue in question? he didn't say jack about any of what he searched, I broke it down and laid it out and those videos, unfortunately, didn't give me the result I was looking for, hence, why i asked forum... Next time I'll be sure to include all of my recent findings and whatnot.
THANK you. This is solid. It seems to be that one post I didn't come across in my searches.

To those that felt offended for one reason or another, sorry? I've done my homework to the best of my ability, which is why i reached out on here for further insight when someone says nothing but post a screenshot of a google search, that's kind of insulting, and made me think, "holy hell... who is this guy that thinks google is this new option ive never heard of... of course that was my first course of action, its 2020 ffs... and doesn't actually mention anything regarding the vids. he likely didn't watch the vids, and posts the screenshot thinking im the idiot..."

anyhow, I'm not here to make enemies or offend anyone thats sensitive. I was rude in some cases and sorry for that, just looking for help.

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
In your model year, the wheel speed sensor is what feeds your scan gauge from the OBD2 sensor where it is receiving its signal. The speedo gets its input from the transmission housing as you referred to earlier.

IIRC it is the driver rear but I would pull both and clean both of them well. It is probably just some dirt, oil and/or grease are the most common contaminants due to leaking axle seals.

I know there's a lot of knowledge here, which is why I reached out... its a phenomenal space.
I reached out for insight, then to have some hero post a screenshot of google search, seriously? It was very disappointing... ANYONE on the thread would have had a similar reaction I did, which was "ffs, is he serious?!" I just called him out on it. its 2020, of course, I searched it, Id figured that'd go without saying... From now on, I'll be more informative on my OPs.
